Why SGOV instead of buying T-bills yourself?
  • Here "T-bills" means short-term Treasury bills (3-month), not longer Treasury notes or bonds, whose prices swing more. They pay a little more than SGOV, but you hold them to maturity or sell at the market price. At TreasuryDirect you cannot sell at all: a new bill must wait 45 days before it can even move to a brokerage.
  • Bills mature every few weeks, so you have to roll them into new ones.
  • SGOV holds those same short-term bills (0–3 months) for you. Sell any market day, cash the next business day, same state-tax break, for a 0.09% fee.
